Science is not a Political Debate, The Science

Since my last post talked mostly about the climate science debate, I thought I would take time in this post to discuss the science itself. As mentioned earlier I have spent some time researching and found a video that provides an excellent summary of skeptic arguments and the science debunking them. I will only be discussing a few of the more commonly presented arguments (as the total video runs over 2 hours.)

Disclaimer: The majority of the following posts will be an analysis of Mr. Collin Maessen's work in Climate Changes, But Facts Don't: Debunking Monckato. All credit for the arguments presented belongs to Mr. Maessen. I will merely expand, and analyze on a few parts. When initially investigating the climate change debate I found myself extremely disappointed and unconvinced by the most touted popular work on the subject, Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. I felt his repeated use of emotional pleas (pathos) severely undermined his argument. Instead of sticking to the science he generally referenced it in passing between anecdotes. This blog post will be a review and analysis of the first part of the video Climate Changes, But Facts Don't: Debunking Monckato (YouTube link) by Collin Maessen. I found it to be extremely compelling because in contrast to An Inconvenient Truth, Mr. Maessen immediately supports all his assertions with demonstrated evidence from scientific studies (and references those studies with quotations from them.) This video is based on a debate over climate change at the National Press Club of Australia (19 July 2011) between Richard Denniss (supporting man-made climate change) and Lord Christopher Monckton (his opposition.) Lord Monckton claims as his credentials to have published peer reviewed literature on the subject (the newsletter itself has a disclaimer over the article stating it is not peer-reviewed.) As he repeatedly admonishes people to "do their homework" before debating, Mr. Maessen has taken up his challenge. The video specifically shows Lord Monckton's arguments during the debate with a pause for analysis (and thorough debunking) of each one. I found the video extremely compelling as Lord Monckton uses the most common arguments against anthropogenic (human caused) climate change and is demonstrated to be, after analysis, thoroughly unsupported by the evidence. I will only be addressing the subjects of scientific consensus and the proof that climate change is, in fact, man made (as these are the two most common arguments I hear.)

The initial argument made by Lord Monckton was that simply supporting anthropogenic climate change based on the scientific consensus was both an argument ad populum (appeal to the majority) and ad verecundiam (appeal to authority.) These are what is know as logical fallacies or arguments which are logically inconsistent (see here or Wikipedia for a more thorough explanation.) Briefly explained, believing something is true because it is the popular opinion or because some authority says it is true. These can be demonstrated as logically fallacious by observing the popular opinion on slavery in the 18th century, or the beliefs of medical "experts" prior to the Germ Theory of Disease. Of course, Lord Monckton himself is coming perilously close to the fallacy fallacy. However, as he uses this point to debunk a specific argument and not the claim itself I think we can clear him of that accusation. This is still a gross misrepresentation of scientific consensus.

Scientific consensus is based on evidence. When a hypothesis is supported by observation, repeatability, and is predictive there is generally a consensus that the hypothesis is a valid scientific theory. Mr. Maessen points out there is scientific consensus on many theories (e.g. germ theory, evolutionary theory.) The point being, scientific consensus does not justify itself through what is popular but what it is demonstrably observable through experimentation and peer-review. Science is constantly evolving, as emerging technology expands what is observable. While science has often been proven wrong and updated, its method demands these revisions. The quickest and easiest way to true fame and adoration in a scientific field is to provide compelling evidence overturning accepted theory (see: every major scientific breakthrough in recent human history.) The most well known scientists are those who provided new insights through novel techniques or those who overturned popular theory. One can't help but draw the comparison to evolution. Compelling evidence disproving either would be a resounding victory for the extremely well funded international "right wing" and would simply require a single, factual, paper displaying demonstrable (observable,) evidence that disproved the currently accepted theory. They wouldn't even have to posit a replacement theory. Popularly stated online (with an anonymous or apocryphal source) "You can disprove evolution? Then write it down, have it peer-reviewed and collect your Nobel Prize." This is a fundamental tenant of science, it isn't determined by committee but by observing the evidence. The famous biologist Richard Dawkins was once questioned on how we could justify faith in science giving us the truth in light of its many mistakes. He responded with the pithy quote "if you base medicine on science it cures people, if you base the design of planes on science they fly, if you base the design of a rocket on science it reaches the moon, it works." While science has, of course, been wrong in the past its assertions are based on models that not only explain the evidence but predict future evidence. Interestingly no one is challenge the scientific consensus on the theories of plate tectonics, gravity, or the germ theory of disease (see previous post on politicization.)

We can see the predictive nature of current climate models in the hearing Climate Change Research and Scientific Integrity Hearing before the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation February 7, 2007. When asked by Hon. Ted Stevens about the impacts of natural factors vs. human ones Dr. Richard Anthes replies, "we know enough already to conclude that the human effects on climate change are now outweighing natural (non-human) effects" and that,

     "Uncertainties arise from shortcomings in our understanding of climate processes
      operating in the atmosphere, ocean, land and cryosphere, and how to best represent
      those processes in models. Yet, in spite of these uncertainties, today's best climate models are
      now able to reproduce the climate of the past century, and simulations of the evolution of
      global surface temperature over the past millennium are consistent with
      paleoclimate reconstructions."

These models not only explains observable data but can accurately predict future discoveries. That the developed computer model can accurately model all previously observed climate states is a compelling argument toward its validity.


Many accuse climate scientists of ignoring countervailing theories. That the evidence is in fact there, but those presenting are shunned for going against consensus. Mr. Maessen's video shows testimony delivered during the 2010 Subcommittee on Energy & Environment hearing, A Rational Discussion of Climate Change: the Science, the Evidence, the Response. When questioned by Rep. Brain Baird on we can know the actual cause (human vs. nature) of global climate change Dr. Richard Alley President of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research first mentions that the physical properties of CO2 are well know and non-controversial. The he goes on to describe the millions of dollar that have gone into isolating and testing other potential factors. For each potential alternative explanation they carefully measured its impacts. With all possible factors accounted for human action is still the overwhelmingly prevalent factor in CO2 levels. In short, climate science has accepted challenges and has completely disproved each one.

My previous post tries to explain why there is such a strong, persist, effort to deny climate science at all. While as mentioned earlier certain special interest groups (like petroleum companies) have invested huge sums of money in attacking climate science. Additionally, the issue has been politicized (the video goes into additional depth on free trade and national sovereignty.) This necessitates right-wing politicians to loudly denounce the science (because saying they don't care because it would cost money would sound woefully shortsighted.) A study I have found since my previous post is this article in an actual peer reviewed journal regarding the connection between climate change denial and conservative think tanks (which just so happen to receive huge contributions from, when not outright owned by, companies with vested interested in oil and coal.)

In summary climate science has been proven, repeatedly, to be the most conclusive and accurate model of our world and that conclusive and accurate science demonstrates overwhelming evidence that climate change is man-caused and will most likely have serious consequences. It is not accurate by majority rule but by the principles of science. It has peer-reviewed consensus, it is predictive, and it has accepted and withstood all challengers. The only controversy is political, not scientific.

Science is not a Political Debate

I thought I would take this blog to talk politics. While Emma S. Normans article Who's counting? Spatial politics, ecocolonisation and the politics of calculation in Boundary Bay speaks more to geographical politics I thought I would discuss general environmental politics as it pertains to the United States.

The United States of America has a serious problem, science denial. For the sake of brevity I will limit myself to climate science. In spite of being the dominant world superpower we fall far behind pretty much every developed nation when it comes to climate conscientiousness. How could the only nation that ever landed human beings on the Moon become so scientifically illiterate as to ignore the consistent conclusions of thirty years of research?

Simple, we have politicized science. By making it a left or right, republican or democrat, issue both side have blithely ignored scientific consensus because "that study had an *other-side bias." While we have all seen examples of politically/financially motivated "science" (smoking studies funded by the tobacco industry come to mind,) this does not imply internationally recognized bodies of science reach consensus based on political ideology. When it comes to climate science the majority of the Republican party categorically denies its truths. So we have to ask ourselves why, why would men with advanced degrees choose to ignore overwhelming evidence?

First, let's discuss the obvious one, money. Being environmentally responsible costs far more than dumping waste, using old technologies, ignoring inconvenient things like environmental inspection, or investing in "greener" technologies. While full cost accounting shows this to be an utterly fallacious line of thinking the businesses doing the most damage to the environment only see a bottom-line. Unfortunately, there is an almost unbelievable amount of money in these industries (take a look at Dubai From 1990 to 2007 when oil was discovered in the United Arab Emirates.) These industries have a vested interest in avoiding environmental conscientiousness and have the money to get their way.  Convoluted legal schemes and donor hiding allow companies and investors to spend billions funding climate science skeptics, lobbying politicians (along with campaign funding,) and falsely advertising how they really do care about the environmentally (British Petroleum ads after Deepwater Horizon anyone?) With the overwhelming imbalance of money on the side of financial expediency, what chance does science have?

Of course all this money provides motivation, but how to excuse your ignorance to the voters? Simple, if you can twist through enough cognitive dissonance to ignore climate science than surely the "fiscally conservative" thing to do is not "waste" money on green technology or "hurt the economy" with requirements like cap and trade or a carbon emission tax. If they can convince the voters that the science isn't real than they simply explain they're not wasting money on it. We have reached the point in science denial where The head of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology wants to eliminate the peer-review process for National Science Foundation Grants and replace it with Congressional (complete layman) oversights based on "the importance to society" of the research. Here we see a power grab to control scientific funding on the basis that Congress knows best how to conduct research. By denying the science that is inconvenient and attempting to control its funding, these congressman are willfully selling our planet's future.

The voters aren't getting their slice of the kickbacks, why aren't they speaking up? If all this is such a grand conspiracy against the people why wouldn't the people oust these greedy politicians? First off, as mentioned above, these industries have the money to fund bogus studies, advertise their innocence, and sponsor news organizations to promote their agenda. More insidiously, we see the true hazard of politicization. If you identify as a conservative or Republican global warming is "against your side." You identify with the beliefs of your party. Simply put, by framing the debate over global warming in to us versus them you essentially destroy any chance of intelligent, reasonable discourse. Studies have shown that, especially in politically charged discourse, even when presented with facts people refuse to change their minds.These studies show that when speaking on partisan issues, when presented with unarguable facts, people will retreat to "I know I'm right" without any evidence. In fact, a recent study has shown that when presented with light-bulbs identical in every sense conservatives, and even moderates, would be less likely to buy said bulb simply because it was labeled "environmentally friendly." These studies demonstrate a rather frighting level of combativeness and a pathetic lack of critical thinking.

The other argument we see against climate change is the completely unscientific argument from religious fundamentals. This article references a new study showing that belief in the second-coming of Jesus Christ has a demonstrable effect on belief that we should make efforts to curb climate change. While many moderate Christians find this idea ridiculous we can hear the strident criticism coming from the fundamentalists that man couldn't possibly effect God's perfect world and He will end the world we he chooses. Of course this is yet another argument from ignorance. Human beings have had a provably negative impact on the Earth. Even if belief in the second coming is reasonable, it is completely unfounded to assume the effects of climate change won't become destructive before that event. Nor is there any reason to believe that global warming would completely destroy humanity, necessitating or triggering a second coming.

The only possible solution to this massive issue is education. You simply cannot make an informed decision without becoming reasonably knowledgeable on the issue. You must view both sides, research, and take the time to think. Yes, I have heard climate skeptics speak, I've read Glenn Beck, and watched Rush Limbaugh. The opinions expressed above have been drawn from well over 100 hours of research on both sides of the issue, including scientific peer-reviewed articles on the subjects. No one expects you to become a scientists, but your opinion matters. Enough informed people can make a difference, this issue is global, it will span centuries, and it's everyone's responsibility.

Environmental Effects of Mining in the Keweenaw

The Keweenaw Peninsula, located in the upper peninsula of Michigan was the site of the first copper boom. Industrial mining on a huge scale began in the middle of the 19th century. Previously pristine landscapes were rapidly converted to support the mining operations. The local ecosystem to this day has not recovered from the impact. In addition to the civil infrastructure needed to sustain the miners and heavy mining equipment the major environmental effects are being felt from the dumping of mining waste into the local lakes.

The peak of the mining was done during a time when the environment wasn't a factor in the public consciousness. While the conservation movement in the United States can be traced back to the founding it wasn't really popularized until the 1950s. As a result mining operations completely disregarded the environmental impacts of their practices. This can be seen even today in abandoned equipment, or massive beaches composed entirely of mining waste.

Torch lake (incidentally the site of the above pictured abandoned dredge) is one of the worse cases of pollution in the Keweenaw. The Environmental Protection Agency began investigating Torch lake in 1988 and eventually declared it a Super Fund Site. Over 200 million tons of copper mill stamp sand, in addition to chemicals used in the mining process, are believed to have been dumped into the lake. The Environmental Protection Agency warns of health concerns from ingesting the waters or fish taken from the lake. The primary impact is on the lake's ecosystem. While the EPA website no longer contains the report, it is mirrored here.

In addition to Torch lake massive amounts of stamp sand has also been dumped into Lake Superior, along the east side of the Keweenaw. Besides the concerns of contamination, stamp sand poses many other risks to wildlife. This article from the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission states that the destruction of bottom dwelling animals, the risks posed by fine particulate matter, and the lack of holes and small openings can have a significant adverse effect on local wildlife.

In this one region we can see multiple examples of the hazards of mining on the local ecosystem. While the materials gained from mining are important to human life, this need must be balanced with consideration of the environmental impacts. Wanton disregard for the environment can and has left lasting damage that, when considered, outweigh the additional costs of ecologically responsible practices.

The Energy Crisis and Climate Change

The world is developing. Over the last century rapid technological development has lead to an  increase in the rate of development around the world. Nations on the forefront of technology have transitioned from sending anthropologists to study "primitive" cultures, to sending food and medical supplies to the "Third World." Now in addition to sending products, we are attempting to send production. We send schoolbooks, educators, and learning tools. The development of the Third World is widely applauded as a humanistic effort. In addition to improving quality of life for our fellow humans it provides tangible benefits in curtailing population growth and, in turn, the demand for foodstuffs. However, while we have worked tirelessly to help our fellow man into the new industrial/information age we have neglected the enormous gap between the resource demands between subsistence living and the life most citizens of developed nations enjoy. 

While having success decreasing the unsustainable demand for food caused by explosive population growth we are creating a new demand in these developing regions that is already incredibly destructive in the developed world. The demand for the new currency of life, the driving force of modern society, electricity. We in developed nations utilize this force for nearly everything in our everyday life. Life in the First World without electricity is a life without our primary source of lighting, entertainment, communication, transportation, resource production, and even security. The quality of life provided by electricity has influenced modern movements assisting developing nations. The idea that modern living standards are necessary for all people can be demonstrated in the UN policy that Internet access is a basic human right and the One Laptop per Child project.

Unfortunately this ignores the gigantic, hotly contested (in the US anyways) elephant in the room. Since the 1970 climate scientists have been sounding the alarm on what seemed to be significant, man-made, climate change. The increasing outputs of carbon dioxide caused by burning fossil fuels is now confirmed to have serious harmful effects on the environment. Storms more violent than any we have seen, record breaking heat-waves, and melting in the poles are just the beginning of what scientists are predicting. With developing nations building electricity based infrastructure and the modern world still increasing its energy demands how can we provide for this demand while avoiding irreversible damage to our ecosystem?

China, the up and coming industrial giant is rapidly approaching the point where it will exceed the coal consumption of the rest of the world combined. To a developing nation coal's low cost and low tech implementation is extremely appealing. However coal is one of the dirtiest forms of power generation. China is now experiencing pollution so bad it is considered a major health hazard. On the US scale from 0-500 (300+ levels are only in seen in the US around major forest fires) China has reached as high as 755. This brings into question the true cost of coal.

Full Cost Accounting is the idea that all factors, like environmental and health effects, should be factored into the cost of energy. In the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences Dr. Epstein et al estimated the full cost of coal to be between 9-27 cents per kWh (kilowatt hour) with a median of 18. As shown in the chart below this median is well above the US Energy Information Agencies estimates for the cost of natural gas, on-shore wind, geothermal, biomass, hydroelectric, and even nuclear power generation (note the change in units from cents per kWh to dollars per kWh.)

While natural gas, hydroelectric, and nuclear power generation have their own significant shortfalls on-shore wind is one of the cheapest, cleanest sources of energy we have found. Countries far-sighted enough to invest in this power source are now reaping significant dividends. For example Belgium is now using wind to generate more power than they can use and are now working on ideas to store the excess for sale or times of need.

Developing Sustainability in Developing Nations

The exponential increase in world population, combined with a finite level of natural resources, is leading humanity toward a resource shortage. Many First World nations are approaching this issue wholeheartedly. Through technological advancement, environmentally oriented policies, and population controls most developed countries are working to prevent resource shortages. However, while First World nations consume more resources on a person to person basis, it is developing areas (Asia, Africa, South America) that account for 85% of population growth1.

Clearly it is crucial to devote international resources to develop sustainable solutions in developing nations. First and foremost it is important to realize that a multifaceted solution is necessary. Simply halting population growth or increasing production will not be sufficient. Balancing the distribution of development allows the whole population to benefit and prevents massive migrations as people seek more opportune living conditions. 
 
Prosperity through development decreases fertility rates. Primary through indirect social and cultural factors, properly managed development often solves population problems on its own. Increases in nutrition, healthcare, and decreases in poverty prevent families from relying on multiple children for social security. This increase in social security, combined with education and the promotion of women's rights can drastically reduce reproduction rates. 

While many would consider women's rights an unrelated social issue, it is clearly linked to population growth and resource sustainability. Access to better healthcare during childbirth, equal education, and equal opportunities allow both the social security and economic opportunities that lead to decreases in population growth. While human rights have advanced internationally, it is important to realize women's rights includes many gender unique issues that often aren't addressed in blanket human rights policies. This Panos briefing shows a number of issues unique to women and offers solutions for the promotion of human rights. Access to safe childbirth conditions, safe abortion options, and the prevention of sexual violence are crucial to developing sustainable nations. 

Education is perhaps the most crucial factor in properly managing development. Education not only provides people a means of livelihood, it also promotes tolerance and human rights. As stated in the UN document Our Common Future, "Education should also be geared towards making people more capable of dealing with problems of overcrowding and excessive population densities, and better able to improve what could be called 'social carrying capacities1.'" This blog identifies the lack of funding, internet access, and female education to be the largest threats to education in developing nations. 

Finally, as development increases access to new technologies and processes can increase the production of resources. In his document Sustainabilty from 3rd World Perspective Richard Tinsley identifies balance sustainability with self-sufficiency, careful consideration of land use, organic fertilizer usage, integrated pest management, system buffers, and post harvest processing to be the key factors to developing sustainable agriculture. 

While there are hundreds of factors that promote sustainability many of them (access to healthcare, social security) often develop on their own as a natural result of develop. This issues addressed here benefit from external support. Many, especially women's rights, can be extremely unpopular in underdeveloped and undereducated areas where populations cannot see or understand the benefits. That is why the promotion of these issues is a crucial part of responsible development.
